Piaggio MP3 Riders

An online community of people that love to ride and talk about 3 wheel leaners!

...gas prices were rising and I started to think that maybe I should start looking for a motorcycle to relieve the 17mpg money siphon my truck was becoming. My wife was not real fond of the idea of a motorcycle so I started looking at alternatives. Diesels, 3 wheelers, and even electric cars were some of my Google searches but none of the results were very interesting.

While immersed in Google world, through some undoubtedly complex word combination search, I happened on a picture of a strange looking 3 wheeler. Strange because it had 2 wheels in front and one in the rear. Emblazoned on the photo were 3 characters "MP3". Even though I thought it must have been someone's prototype or Photoshop design, I started using MP3 in my searches and soon found an article with a picture at thekneeslider.com. That was when I started to get interested though I did think it was odd that someone would name a scooter after a popular music file format.

I found a Vespa dealer in St. Augustine a couple weeks later and they had a demo MP3 250 that they let me test drive. I fell in love with it and began working up the sales pitch for my wife. It took about a month of talking to her about the extra safety two front wheels adds to the scooter and the 70mpg (claimed) before she was convinced. I also promised to use ATGATT and have stuck to it.

I have put over 4,000 miles on it since then and have gone through one rear tire and I still love it as much as the day I drove it home. And the looks I get from people when they see it...and the questions...more on that later.

Maintenance

Thought it may be interesting to start a log of what maintenance I have done and will do for my 250. So far it has been relatively normal I guess.

600 miles had the required service done with a cost of just over 200 dollars

3,000 miles I checked the oil and brakes and other stuff the 3000 mile check requires. No cost.

3,500 miles I replaced the stock Pilot Sport rear with a Heidenau K58. Did the wheel removal myself so the cost to have the new tire put on the rim and balanced was $23.00 and t… Continue
